Zora

“Zora, it’s not like I haven’t been telling you for the longest. You may as well quit, babe. You have a lot going on right now. As much as momma is going to feel some type of way, you will be able to keep our son yourself. You know she will keep him anytime in case you want to get out of the house to run errands or go shopping,” Jay said as he stood in the bathroom as she tried her best to vomit up what was causing her to feel nauseous.

“I don’t know about all that,” Zora said as she turned to look at him. Hell, she thought that she had locked the door. She almost lost her cool when he walked in, but she couldn’t. She was bent over throwing up a little of nothing into the toilet bowl.

“I don’t know why you have ever been worried about anything. I told you before I married you that I had you. All I wanted was your loyalty,” he said looking into her eyes. When he said that, she looked down. Being sick to her stomach often and the frequent trips to the restroom scared her.

“I will see. You know how I like to go to work. You know I love doing what I do. Plus, Myra watching Braylon is making her young again. I don’t want to take that from her,” Zora said.

“Ok babe. It’s all on you. If you want to work, work. I am only trying to make it easier for you. Because by the looks of things this job is stressing you out,” Jay said starting to brush his teeth. The scent from the minty toothpaste initiated Zora’s gag reflex. She bent over the toilet just in time for it to catch the clear liquid that she vomited.

“Are you sure that you’re okay? I can just take Braylon over to momma’s house. You don’t need to be around him. You could be contagious. His immune system is weak at this age, and he doesn’t need to get sick,” Jay said not even looking at Zora.

“That might be a good idea,” she told him. Zora thought about calling into work. She hadn’t been back since she’d taken off to take her mother to pick up Xavier. It seemed like there was one bad thing happening after another. Not knowing how she would get through a day of work, she decided to call in. “Take all of the time you need,” her boss had told her. Zora was grateful for having a great boss. She knew that it was all because she was a hard worker. One thing that her parents instilled in her while growing up was to go hard at everything that you do. While Zora preferred to be the surgeon performing the surgery, she worked just as hard by passing him the tools that he needed to save a life. She’d lost her opportunity at becoming a doctor years ago. Instead of hitting her books hard during her first semester of college, she chose to party.
